| Although Woodseat first visited France in 1937 it was not until 1978 that he discovered the Tarn through the kindness of close French friends. So it was that he and his wife eventually decided that it would be an ideal place to live after retiring from business. Just over ten years ago, on reaching the age of 69 he and family transferred to the home they had purchased and lovingly restored in Tauriac. After a relatively short period his plans for an active retirement were unexpectedly hindered and he found himself needing to occupy his time in a more reflexive and sedentary fashion. And just at that point he was introduced to Barbara Kryvovias’ Atelier in Gaillac. And so it was that he made a second belated discovery. A love of painting. Or perhaps a re-discovery since he had occasionally dabbled with colour over the years. Under Barbara’s nurture and guidance he started out using oils and acrylics and found it easy to express his affinity for the diversity of colour and light in his new surround. Woodseat believes absolutely in colour as an emotional force. It follows then that creating his own world of colour and texture absorbs him and when this pleases others his pleasure is compounded. His original choice of subject matter was as old as painted images themselves: .. landscapes. He has learnt to handle his chosen media with great skill and keeps a deceptive spontaneity in his work - which looks easy when well done - but therein lies the artist’s sleight of hand. The paintings are rich and full of visual texture. They are good pictures and a joy to own. In a little under four years his output has been copious and his search for a more personal means of expression is manifest in the development of his work, now marked by his new preference or tendency towards abstract realism which begins to predominate. Some of his work has been acquired by admirers in Spain , in the UK , New Zealand and South America whilst numerous works have been acquired within his own area of South West France. A.F-K. |
